The next day, the senate took a vote and unanimously agreed to declare war on Japan. The US was now a part of World War II.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a smart tactical move made by the Japanese. If they had succeeded, they would have achieved their goal of controlling the Pacific Ocean for several months while the US was forced to repair their navy fleets.
