Dictators in Italy & Germany
Dictators in Germany and Italy During the time leading up to World War II there was a major and transition in types of government in some of the main powers in Europe. Two of the greatest shifts were in Italy with the rise to power of Benito Mussolini who took power in 1928 and Adolf Hitler who began his strict fascist rule in 1933. These two leaders were fascists. Fascism is a totalitarian form of government that uses the idea of Nationalism to unite a country for a common cause. Adolf Hitler was inspired by Mussolini rise to power in 1922 but would not succeed in his coup to bring down the German government that existed at the time.
He was imprisoned for his action and during his sentence he spent his time writing his radical book Mien Kampf that blamed many of the problems that Germany was facing on the Jewish population. Years later after his time in prison with the help of Mussolini, Hitler would help the fascist rule spread to Spain with the election on Francisco Franco in 1931.
Germany in the early 1930’s was struggling to repay their debts that they owed after World War I and they were hurting a lot. Hitler, although he had radical views, provided the German people with a sense of security. He promised to create fiscal solvency and to bring Germany back to where it was in the past, as a world super power. Mussolini and Hitler would create a team with the countries that the Germans would take over, until the Americans were coming in to take over Italy and Mussolini was assassinated. This would be the beginning of the demise of Hilter and his reign.
