Praise The Lord and Pass The Ammunition by Kay Kyser
Lyrics: Down went the gunner, a bullet was his fate Down went the gunner, then the gunners mate Up jumped the sky pilot, gave the boys a look And manned the gun himself as he laid aside The Book, shouting Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free! Praise the Lord and swing into position! Can't afford to sit around and wishin' Praise the Lord we're all between perdition and the deep blue sea! Yes the sky pilot said it You've got to give him credit for a son - of - gun - of - a - gunner was he, Shouting; Praise the Lord we're on a mighty mission! All aboard, we're not a - goin' fishin; Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free! |

War Song Analysis by Maite Knorr-Evans The song Praise The Lord and Press The Ammunition and was written by Frank Loesser during World War II. This is a very patriotic song about a chaplain who is asked to say a prayer about when men fall under attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor when the bombed us on December 7th, 1941. By saying "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free!" this urges people to support or join the war effort by depicting the war through a very black or white lens. This lyric says that we must prays god, pass the ammunition and if we do that we will be able to defeat the enemy and keep our freedoms. This song agrees with the foreign policy of the time which was to join the war effort by joining on the team of the allied powers to take down the Nazis, and the Japanese. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a major turning point in the war, and since music is such a big part of our culture this song was a very good representation of letting people know about the governments thought of the war. |
